Rag Rug Socks ~ Räsymattosukat

I had for a couple years already wanted to knit stripy socks using two self striping yarns. Finally after a long time I was able to get my favorite self striping Novita 7 Veljestä sateenkaari (rainbow) here from Finland, thanks to mom now I was going to knit myself knee high socks. Well, suddenly out of nowhere seems like the whole world of Finnish sock knitters have had the same idea, and I see the socks done exactly that way everywhere on Facebook's sock knitting groups. I was a bit disappointed not to be the trend setter, since I thought it was my idea, but was going to make my socks anyhow. Good thing is, not too many people from Finland will be here around my hoods in Texas wearing their wool socks. :D

I made my socks toe-up and used Fleegle heel and mock cable on the ribbing. I am not sure I like the mock cable, it doesn't seem to have have the same kind of memory as regular ribbing, but I think the problem is in a stitch count. I probably need to decrease few stitches before starting my cuff once I get around to fixing them. But here they are, very simple and very warm and they make me very happy.

Olen jo pari vuotta halunnut neuloa raitasukat kahdesta eri itsestäänraidoittuvasta langasta ja sain viimein odottamani lempilangan Novitan 7 Veljestä Sateenkaaren Suomesta, kiitos äidille, ja vihdoin olin valmis aloittamaan sukkani. Yllättäin näyttääkin siltä että puolet Suomen sukkienneulojista on ollut samoilla ajatuksilla ja näitä sukkia olikin yhtäkkiä pitkin Facebookin neulontaryhmiä. Olin hieman pettynyt etten ollutkaan se trendin aloittaja, vaikka olinkin tätä miettinyt jo pitkään, mutta aioin tehdä sukkani siitiä huolimatta. Positiivisena voin ilmoittaa, että ei onneksi kovin monet suomalaiset tule tänne Texasiin meikäläisen kulmille elvistelemään hienoilla sukillaan. :D

Tein sukat varpaista varteen ja käytin Fleegle kantapäätä (ei mitään tietoa josko sille on suomenkielinen nimityksin) ja varteen laitoin valepalmikkoa, mutta en tykkääkkään siitä niin paljon kuin luulin. Joustin ei tunnu palautuvan yhtä kauniisti kuin tavallisella joustimella, mutta luulen että ongelma on ennemmin silmukkamäärässä kuin itse neulemallissa. Aion kuitenkin varmaan korjata resorin vaihtamalla joustinneuleeseen ja kaventamalla muutaman silmukan verran. Mutta tässä ne kuitenkin ovat, oikein yksinkertaiset, oikein lämpimät ja saavat minut oikein hyväntuuliseksi.

Chevron And Sherbet ~ Siksakkia Vadelmaisissa Väreissä

This here is one of the first socks I made for myself. Well, I meant to make it for someone else, but they became quite tight due to lots of decreases, so I didn't dare to give them away, instead made another pair. I love this color scheme from Drops Fabel, reminds me of a raspberry sherbet and I think it worked quite nicely with my pattern, just would have to advice the tightness by adding stitches one way or the other. After all, I quite like these socks, too bad I have to keep them for myself ;)

Nämä sukat ovat yhdet ensimmäisistä jotka olen itselleni tehnyt. Tai jos ollaan ihan rehellisiä, niin en alunperin niitä ollut itselleni tekemässä, mutta monien kavennusten vuoksi sukat eivät ole kovin joustavat enkä uskaltanut antaa niitä pois, vaan neuloin toisen parin. Tämä on yksi Drops Fabel langoista kaunein mielestäni, väri muistuttaa vadelma sorbettia ja mielestäni se sopii aika hyvin malliini. Täytyy vain vähän värkätä tuota tiukkuutta lisäämällä silmukoita jollain tapaa. Kaiken kaikkiaan kuitenkin tykkään näistä sukista, harmi että jouduin ne itse pitämään. ;)

More Animal Madness ~ Lisää Höpöilyä Koirien Kustannuksella

I totally forgot to post an update to my doggy snood. I made couple hats for my pups, one looking like a zebra and the other was supposed to be a some sort of cheetah type kitty, but forgot to show you the newer ones.  :) You can see the original post here. The zoo has grown a bit, the next in line was a tiger and frog and I have to say I had ton of fun making these. I also have a piglet and lamb one, but the ears need a bit fixing, so I will post about those later once my criteria has been met ;)

Someone is not amused!

Totaalisesti pääsi unohtumaan päivitys minun koirapipoihini. Tein pari hassua pipoa koirilleni, yhden seepran tyylisen ja toisen gepardin oloisen misun, mutta unohdin näyttää minun muita versioitani. :) Voit nähdä alkuperäisen bloggaukseni täältä. Eläintarhamme on kasvanut hieman, seuraavina vuorossa ovat tiikeri ja sammakko ja täytyy myöntää että minulla on ollut aikalailla hauskaa näitä neuloessani. Myös possu ja lammas ovat nähneet päivänvalon, mutta heidän korvansa kaipaavat hieman kohennusta ja bloggailenkin niistä sitten korjaukset tehtyäni. ;)

Kin Socks~ Kin Sukat

Another exchange done. We had few patterns to choose from, the idea is to try something new. I chose a kin pattern, since I had never tried it before and it seemed pretty straight forward pattern, easy to follow and something I actually did like. I had couple other patterns I would have wanted to try, but the cuff needed to be stretchy for my partner, so I was left with the only pattern that had ribbing on the cuff. But I didn't mind, I was happy to try a pattern that looked easy.

I generally choose for the surface structure a solid color, cause I think it shows the pattern the best, but I had this self striping yarn that I really wanted to try. I really like the yarn and also the pattern, but I still think I should have stuck to the solid colors. But I am glad the one who received the socks liked it. :)

Jälleen yksi sukkavaihto tuli tehtyä. Valinnanvaraa oli muutamasta mallista, tarkoituksena oli kokeilla uutta mallia, jotain jota ei ole aikaisemmin tullut tehtyä. Siispä valitsin Kin sukat, sillä kuvio on aika yksoikoinen ja mutkaton ja jo jonkin aikaa olin sitä halunnut kokeilla. Mahdollisissa malleissa oli pari muutakin kiinnostavaa sukkamallia, mutta parini tarvitsi joustoa sukanvarteen, ja siksi päädyin ainoaan malliin jossa oli varsinaista joustinneuletta.

Yleensä valitsen pintakuvioihin yksivärisen langan, mutta halusin kokeilla miltä raitalankani näyttäisi tässä. Tykkään langasta ja mallista, mutta ehkä sittenkin olisi ollut parempi aivan yksivärisestä. No, pääasia että vastaanottaja tykkäsi.

The Hero of Canton ~ Cantonin Sankari

One of our favorite TV shows has been the Firefly. There is just no justification ever to have it air for  one season only. I believe that it would have knocked the Star Trek out of the water if it was ever given the opportunity to grow up from the baby stage it was in. But as it happens we can only imagine the rest of the story and be surprised of the cult following the series that was cut too short.

My husband has asked me for probably years now if I could make a Jayne Cobb hat for him, and the request has been a bit odd to me, since I can see that his hat is meant to handle the Himalayans climate and we live in Texas. But this year for his birthday I gave up and ordered the appropriate yarn for the hat, which happens to be bulky Berkshire Yarn alpaca and wool mix. I just love the bulky yarns, so fast to knit :D Here, you are to decide how I did.

Eräs TV:n lempisarjoistamme on ollut Firefly. Ei siis ole minkäänlaista oikeutusta sille että sarjaa julkaistiin vain yhden tuotantokauden ajan. Star Trek ei olisi ollut yhtä suuri sci-fi sarja ollenkaan jos Firefly olisi saanut mahdollisuuden kasvaa ensimmäisestä kaudesta edemmäksi. Mutta niinkuin nyt sattuu olemaan, niin voimme vain kuvitella mitä olisi seurannut jos sarja ei olisi jäänyt yhtä lyhyeksi.

Mieheni on jo useampi vuosi sitten pyytänyt etta tekisin hänelle Jayne Cobb hatun. Pyyntö on kuullostanut hieman omituiselta huomioiden että hattu on takoitettu kestämään Himalajan säät, mutta me asumme Texasissa. Tänä vuonna tosin päätin antaa periksi ja tilata langat, varsin paksut Bekrsire Yarn langan alpakan ja villan sekoituksesta. Voi miten ihania paksut langat ovatkaan, valmista tulee pian :D Sinä saat päättää miten onnistuin. :)

Paperdolls Shirt ~ Paperinuket Pusero

I managed to accidentally delete my post of the Paperdolls shirt so here it goes again, not the same, but same things. :)

So I decided after long dreaming of the design by one of my favorite designers Katy Davis, that it is time to try my hands on the Paperdolls pattern. With few changes, some accidental and some on purpose, I managed to knit it in record time (for me anyhow) in just two weeks. I used Drops Merino and ChiaoGoo interchangeable bamboo needles #3 US with the ChiaoGoo Red Lace cables.

Ready, but not blocked ~ valmis, vain pingoitus puuttuu

This is my first time doing stranded colorwork and since my colors were contrasting I felt that twisting the yarns of so different colors on the backside of the work would maybe show through, so I opted out to bind all those yarns with the needle and same color of yarn. Not the most fun I have had finishing the yarns, but since I decided not to do the twisting, that seemed to be my only option.

I changed the neck line a little and made it just a little larger since I heard that it would be a bit tight if you do it according to the pattern. I noticed that it sticks out now, so this will be changed for sure in the days to come. :)

Miten onnistuinkin poistamaan postaukseni Paperinuket puserosta, no tässä uusi versio vanhasta aiheesta. :)

Päätin vihdoin ja viimein toteuttaa neuleunelmani ja neuloa Paperinuket puseron, jonka suunnittelija on yksi mielestäni parhaimmista, Katy Davis. Viimein aika koitti kokeilla taitojani tämän kauan ihaillun ohjeen kanssa. Tein muutamia muutoksia malliin, jotkin vahingossa ja toiset tarkoituksella ja taisin olla innoissani neuleestani, sillä se valmistui kahden viikon ennätysajassa, vaikka lankana olikin Dropsin ohut Baby Merino ja puikkoina ChiaoGoo bambu puikot US koko 3 ja  ChiaGoo Red Lace kaapelilla.

Before blocking ~ ennen pingoitusta

Tämä on ensimmäinen kerta kun neuloin kyseisen mallista kirjoneuletyötä, jossa on selkeästi erottuvia kuvioita. Kuvion ja taustavärin varsin erilaiset värit saivat minut karttamaan lankojen kiertoa, sillä pelkäsin niiden kuultavan läpi, ja päädyinkin käsin sitomaan kuvioiden väliset langat neulan ja langan kanssa. Aika turhauttavaa touhua, mutta loppukädessä ainoa mahdollisuuteni jälkikäteen jotta langanjuoksut eivä olisi liian pitkät.

Muutin kaulusta hieman alkuperäisestä suuremmaksi, sillä olin kuullut huhuja sen olevan tiukka ohjeen mukaisesti. Tosin kaulus hieman nousee pystyyn, joten tulevina päivinä suunnitteilla on purkaa siitä muutama rivi.

Peacock socks ~ Riikinkukkosukat

One more pair of socks got done for the sleep sock exchange. Most of the time the fun comes out of the partner receiving them and posting pictures. This time I got to feel a little bitterness, when no notification came saying she had received the socks, nor did she ever send the socks to the person who was her partner. Such is life, luckily the group of people was fun and even though there were quite a few misses, in the end everyone got their socks from someone awfully nice stepping in and refusing anyone to get disappointed.

The socks that I knitted are made according to the pattern Riikinkukko, which means peacock in English. The pattern was easy to follow and I might use it in the future again. I used different yarn and needle size for mine and achieved soft and comfortable sock for sleeping, but for actual wear I would follow the pattern with the yarn and needle recommendations.
The yarn in the pattern is Novita's Nalle, which is 284 yards in 3.5 ounces. You can use any yarn just adjust the gauge.

The pattern is from the blog Annikainen puikoissa. I got her permission to translate it to English.

Cast out 58 stitches in DK, 37 out of which are for k1, p1 ribbing and 21 for the pattern

When knitted on dpn's divide the stitches as follows on the first round:
1st needle 19 stitches of k1, p1 (the last one k)
2nd needle p2, k9
3rd needle k8, p2
4th needle 18 stitches of k1, p1. If you need to adjust the width add or deduct stitches on the ribbing part.

The pattern goes as follows:

1st row p2, k3, k2tog, 7x(yo, k1), yo, ssk, k3, p2
2nd row: p2, k2, k2tog, k15, ssk, k2, p2
3rd row: p2, k1, 2tog, k 15, ssk, k1, 2p
4th row: p2, 2tog. k 15, ssk, p2

Repeat the rows 1 to 4 repeatedly.
Choose the heel and toe pattern to your liking.

Vielä yksi pari unisukkarinkiin. Useimmiten näissä vaihdoissa suurin hauska on kun parisi saa sukkansa ja innoissaan julkaisee kuvaia. Tällä kertaa sain maistaa hieman pettymyksen katkeraa kalkkia, kun vastaanottajani ei ilmoittanut edes kyselyistä huolimatta, tai lähettänyt sukkia omalle vastaanottajalleen. Niin se elämä vain heittelee, hassua miten katkeraa on jos sukat menevät hukkaan tai niitä ei itselle saavukkaan, mutta ihmiset kutovat niitä sellaisella tunteella että pettymys on suuri kun joku ei ole asian suhteen rehellinen. Onneksi ryhmässä oli myös paljon pelastavia enkeleitä, jotka mielellään neuloivat ilman jääneille myös, kieltäytyen kenenkään joutuvan pettymään. Vaihto on kaikki suoritettu ja vaikka joidenkin sukkien tulo kesti, kaikki saivat ne. Myös ne jotka eivät itse sukkia neulonutkaan.

Neulomani sukat tein Riikinkukkosukkien ohjeen mukaan. Sukka oli helppo neuloa ja luulen että saatan käyttää ohjetta toistamiseenkin. Unisukat tehdessäni käytin kuitenkin paksumpia puikkoja kuin ohje suosittelee, sillä en halunnut sukista liian napakoita, vaan mukavan pehmoiset nukkuvaan jalkaan. Jos suunnittelet kyseisen mallin neulomista, suosittelen ohjeiden mukaista materiaalivalintaa.
Itse tein sukat AnniKainen puikoissa blogin mukaan. Sain häneltä luvan ohjeen postaukseen ja kääntämiseksi englanniksi.

Luo 58 s (niistä 37 on 1 o, 1 n resoria ja 21 s mallikertaa).
Aloitus krs: 1.puikko: 19 s 1 o, 1 n(viimeinen s o).
2.puikko: 2 n, 9 o.
3.puikko: 8 o, 2 n.
4.puikko: 18 s 1 o, 1 n. Puikkojen silmukkalukua voi säätää mieleisekseen

Perfect summer and another pair of socks

As the summer keeps creeping towards the end, I have to say it has been the best summer in Texas ever. After years of drought and insane heat, we have finally gotten cooler weather and rain for the summer. The drought is so bad that we are on stage 3 of water restrictions, which mostly means for us that there won't be watering the lawn more than twice a month. Usually that would not be anywhere close to being enough and usually the lawns are even with adequate irrigation fairly brown and yellow at this time of the summer. This summer we have gotten enough rain, so often that we have actually even skipped some waterings. This all suits me great, I love it and if I knew the summers are going to remain like this, I would never even consider traveling around. Well, right now we are few weeks away of us possibly starting to travel around but all is still up in the air and we never know comes our way. I like to keep it like that, keep all our options open, that way what ever comes can be welcomed with open arms.

Anyhow, I have been able to knit through the summer likewise I thought what would happen. I expected my hands to get so sweaty that my yarn would be felted before the needles even touched it. I managed anyway to make a pair of socks to someone else with the pattern I have wanted to try for a long time. The biggest challenges came from following the pattern, there were several sheets of the pattern and I think I managed to hop from one page to another but got it all together after all.
Once more I got a chance to use my awesome yarn that I ordered from Turkey. I knitted the socks one at a time and I wanted to make them a bit mismatch on purpose by starting the next sock exactly where the other one ended without worrying the stripes from the yarn being exactly at the same spot as on the first one's. The color runs were fairly long and the socks ended up being quite different actually but I was in luck and the person they were for was delighted of the fact. Sigh of relief.
The pattern is called hovineito and while the instructions are in Finnish, the diagrams will guide anyone through the pattern with ease.

Kesän hiljalleen edetessä syksyyn, ei voi olla mainitsematta että tämä on ollut kyllä kaikkien aikojen paras kesä Texasissa. Vuosien kuivuuden ja järjettömien helteiden jälkeen viimeinkin saimme viileämmän kesän ja sateita. Kuivuus on ollut niin vakava, että jopa täkälaisten kovasti rakastamien  nurmikoiden kastelut ovat joutuneet pannaan, kuukaden aikana on vain 2 kertaa muutaman tunnin ikkuna jolloin kastelu on sallittua. Normaalisti se ei riittäisi ollenkaan pitämään nurmikoita vihreänä vaan ne ovat usein tähän aikaan olleet jo jonkin aikaa kasteluista huolimatta joko keltaisia tai ruskeita porottavan auringon ansiosta. Mutta tänä kesänäpa on sadetta riittänyt jopa sen verran että uskalsimme kerran tai pari jopa olla kastelematta. Tämä kaikki tuntuu sopivan minulle vallan mainiosti, ihanaa kun kerrankin voi olla ulkona ilman lämpöhalvausta ja jos ilma olisi aina kesäisin näin ihana en ikinä suunnittelisi matkustelua minnekkään muualle. Juuri nyt suunnitelmissamme on muutaman viikon päästä lähteä tien päälle matkustelemaan ympäri maata, mutta mitään ei ole vielä kiveen kirjoitettu ja olemme valmis, tuli mitä sattuukin eteemme. Kaikki seikkailut otetaan vastaan syli avoinna.

Olen pystynyt neulomaan koko kesän läpi, toisin kun luulin. Tosin ilmastointi auttaa pitämään kädet hikoontumatta niin ettei lanka kokonaan huopuisi ennenkuin sitä ehtii edes neuloa. Onnistuin neulomaan sukat lahjaksi mallilla jota on mieleni tehnyt kokeilla jo kauan. Suurimmat haasteet tulivat pysymisestä oikealla sivulla ohjeessa, sillä niitä oli useampi ja loppujen lopuksi sain sukat tehtyä yllättävän pian.
Jälleen kerran sain mahdollisuuden kokeilla lankojani jotka tilasin Turkista. Neuloin sukat yksi kerrallaan ja tein niistä tarkoituksella erilaiset aloittamalla itsestään raidoittuvalla langalla seuraavan sukan juuri siitä mistä edellinen putosi puikoilta sen suurempia surematta. Värijuoksut olivatkin aika pitkiä ja sukista tuli aika erilaiset, ehkä enemmä kuin olin aikonut, mutta onneksi vastaanottaja tykkäsi niistä. Helpotuksen huokaus.
Ohjeen nimi on hovineito, ohje varsin kattava ja onnistuu vaikka ihan kaavion avulla.
